Persistence Pays: Becoming an AI trainer

Breaking into AI training looks simple - right up until you actually try it! The moment you start applying, you realise you’re competing with thousands of other people, all trying to squeeze through the same narrow doorway. The field feels open, but the bar is high.

The work demands sharp reasoning, clear writing, and the ability to follow shifting guidelines while still hitting tight deadlines. It’s fast, it’s intense, and it’s absolutely not the casual side hustle people imagine.

Despite all that, I’ve secured two AI roles out of around fifty applications - roughly a 7% success rate. In a field this competitive, persistence is essential. You have to be willing to keep applying long after the rejections start stacking up.

Even colleagues with far more experience than me talk openly about ongoing rejections for projects they’re perfectly suited to. That’s the reality: you can be excellent and still get turned down. Not because you’re lacking, but because the competition is enormous.
